Shadow of its former self?

The Election Commission of India, a premier, prestigious and autonomous constitutional authority, sadly finds itself in a tangle. Once beyond reproach, it appears to be struggling to find answers to pertinent questions being raised in many quarters (Front page, “Booth-level agents contest EC claim of ‘no objections’” and “No names will be deleted without notice, EC tells SC”, both August 10). The nation wants the Election Commission to be transparent in its functioning and service towards the nation. The election body should understand that it is one of the pillars of the nation and that it has to have credible answers to questions raised.

It is strange why the Bharatiya Janata Party should be working itself into a frenzy when the Election Commission is being questioned. Why is the BJP batting for the election body?

One misses the formidable former Chief Election Commissioner, T.N. Seshan, who held firm and demonstrated that both he was no pushover.
