Governor’s judgment day
The Supreme Court of India’s censoring of the Governor of Tamil Nadu for his unconstitutional conduct and gross dereliction of duty has left his position untenable. He should either resign on his own volition or the Union Government should recall him immediately. This is the only way to appreciate this judgment. During his tenure as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, the incumbent’s actions have been most undemocratic and have also denuded the high office of the Governor. He not only withheld Bills but also walked out of the legislature a number of times. He repeatedly sought to undermine the elected representatives of the State and long-held customs of the State. It is imperative that there is follow-up action to this landmark judgment to reinforce democratic values.

The Supreme Court’s observations are significant. The Governor-government relationship has been spoilt in almost all Opposition-ruled States in the country. ‘Dictatorship by Governor’ should not happen. It is a pity that the BJP wants to rule States that it cannot win through the ballot by using the Governor.
