Tariff ‘war’

Yes, only China is in a position to ‘fight to the end’ in an American-imposed tariff war. The flip-flop by U.S. President Donald Trump is baffling. Perhaps Mr. Trump should realise that in the modern era, the U.S. cannot dictate terms to the world. It has to adopt a ‘live and let live’ policy instead of trying to impose its hegemony on the world.

Court on Governor

The post of Governor and his/her high office, once regarded as an apolitical ombudsman for more than 70 years, is now reduced to a ‘rubber stamp’. Ironically, the judiciary observed only the actions of the Governor, i.e., sitting on Bills for a long time and returning them without assent, but not the contents of those Bills and the reasons for rejection. Our “elected representatives” with little or no qualifications pass many pieces of legislation on matters of national importance. Academic freedom without political interference is the hallmark of higher education. Allowing governments to select Vice-Chancellors for State universities will cause trouble.
