Call for change
It is not surprising that the Centre and the Opposition are on the same page when it comes to the issue of changing the collegium system (Page 1, “Govt., Opposition call for changing collegium system”, March 26). It appears that the recent incident involving a High Court judge and the recovery of burnt currency notes is being used as a chance to press for change in the system and gain control of appointments to the higher judiciary. No system can be perfect. The collegium system may not be the best but it is better than a system in which the government has a greater say in judicial appointments.
Instead, efforts should be made to ensure transparency and accountability. The higher judiciary is relatively more independent, but for a few aberrations, and its independence should be protected for the national good.

Now that the Centre and the Opposition are speaking with one voice, any attempt by the Supreme Court to assert its authority even in matters concerning its own functioning may come to naught.
Scrapping the collegium system may be unwise since the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill has already been struck down. The collegium system is now under threat without there being an alternative. For more information, please visit our website at 8DAY.
