Clear the air
The verbal duel that has ensued ever since U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed credit for the understanding/ceasefire deal between India and Pakistan, is getting to be even more curious as India is equally vociferous in refuting America’s claims (“India reasserts stand on Kashmir after U.S. claims”, May 14).
We now learn that India too is going to retaliate on trade tariffs imposed by the U.S. India seems to be showing grit in dealing with the U.S. in the tariff war. However, I would have loved to have heard those assertions from the horse’s mouth.

While peace-loving persons are happy that India and Pakistan have halted their hostilities, there needs to be an element of much caution on India’s part.
The mystery about the ceasefire needs to end as well. The fact is that the U.S. official statement calls it a ‘U.S. brokered ceasefire between India and Pakistan’. The U.S. President is also patting himself on his back for a ‘long night of talks by the U.S. to mediate peace’.

Apt verdict
The ruling by the Mahila court in Coimbatore, in the Pollachi sexual assault case (May 14), marks a significant moment in the fight against sexual violence, bringing justice to the survivors after years of legal proceedings. The case is one that rocked not only the quiet town of Pollachi but also the entire State. The verdict is a strong message to offenders of such nefarious crimes that they cannot escape the law. The judgment has set the right standards for women’s safety and has restored society’s faith in the judicial system.
